A cache of classic and rare advertisements today for your horrified amusement.
Browsing two outstanding collections, Found in Mom's Basement and the academic catalogue at the Duke Library, reminded me for the nth time of the radical social changes I've witnessed in my lifetime.
The ads come from a world which feminism and the lefty politics of the 60s and 70s unmade. It was an old world with corrupt values and it was time for that old world to die. I want to take a moment to express my gratitude for the Betty Friedans and Bella Abzugs and other fearless women who fought to kill it. Whatever their flaws or missteps, they woke America up to the sewer of misogyny underlying our culture.
I'll start with my own candidate for scariest of the scary: a woman fit for men to walk on. Once upon a time, girls and boys, people found this witty.
In that old world, it was assumed that all women were submissive.
Unfortunately, women had nasty, smelly vaginas
Really, really smelly.
Seriously, the smell would gag a maggot. It took a dose of household cleanser up the hoo-hoo to get men to sleep with their wives.
This made men angry. Especially all those gay men who didn't want to marry women in the first place. Smelly vaginas -- AND they wasted postage stamps too!
Really it was all too much! It's giving me the vapours. I'll be back after a brief respite on my fainting couch. Stay tuned.
