Thanks to Li for pointing me to this.
When I first glanced at it, I thought, uh-oh, talking about sex + elementary school = disaster. But the more I think about it -- well, why *should* an elementary school be off-limits for a clearly adults-only discussion of adult sexuality? It's not as if they are inviting the elementary school students to their worship. I'm sure the school routinely hosts other events which for parents, teachers, and other adults.
Seems that Pastor Cadle is just trying to minister to his people's needs. Isn't that what good pastoring is all about? Why is some bureaucratic risk assessor the final word on this?
MELBOURNE, Fla. – A church giving sermons about sex may have to find a new home. Brevard Public School District's risk-management department has threatened to boot New Hope Church out of Sherwood Elementary because of a worship series titled "Great Sex for You."
Church leaders mailed 25,000 fliers, asking residents "Is Your Sex Life A Bore?" The three-week program kicked off inside the school auditorium. Pastor Bruce Cadle had said the Christian church has been "shamefully silent" on the taboo topic.
Mark Langdorf, the director of risk management, says the mailers generated complaints, were not appropriate for elementary school children and shouldn't be used to advertise the sermon in the school.
Langdorf says the church's lease contract is under review.
Church giving 'great sex' sermons might get booted
Now, let's say you're the kind of person (as I am) who is generally pissed off to see any examples of Church and State in bed together. Technically, Langdorf should be kicking out every group that worships in his district's schools. Because, you know, um, it's illegal. But lets close our eyes to that minor issue because it is, in fact, a commonplace throughout small-town USA that government facilities are used by church groups. And since it is so common, why does a bureacrat get to decide what kind of sermons and topics are permissible? Did he poll the entire community to find out how many people were opposed to the worship v. how many support it? What if the only people who support it are the pastor's flock: don't they have the right to worship as they please?
Seriously, if it isn't appropriate for a worship group to talk about their concerns in the safe setting of a school, where would it be appropriate? At the local leather bar? Say, a lightbulb just went off!
I have a proposal. You KNOW a leather person somewhere would be more than happy to welcome these folks in so they can get a little sexual education. Maybe Pastor Cadle needs to think outside the box on this. Where can anyone -- regardless of orientation or predilection find acceptance? In the BDSM community, of course! The pansexual BDSM/leather community is hands-down more friendly to anyone who wants to have candid, sex-positive dialogue than ANY other known community. So maybe church groups who want to have a little God-loving honest conversation about sex need to start looking into renting space at their local leather bars and BDSM clubs.
Pastor Cadle, come on over to the darkside. That's where you'll find the enlightenment.
